Dal or as many call it Indian soup or Lentil soup, is a liquid preparation which serves as a side dish, specially eaten with rice. There are numerous ways of making dal and there are many varieties along with versions of this lentil soup.
However, have you ever thought that dal can be eaten as chaat? If not then let me tell you that Dal is served as a chaat in a city named Moradabad which is in the state of Uttar Pradesh in India.
Dal Moradabadi, as it is known for, and is a very famous street food of Moradabad, served almost any time of the day, as a starter or snack or eaten just to curb the 7 pm hunger.
Let us make Dal Moradabadi, today and see the recipe of turning dal into chaat. Let's Begin............
Ingredients and Steps:
Take a pressure cooker.
- Add 200 g or 1 cup moong dal (Yellow Lentils - washed and soaked for 1 hour)
- Add 1 tsp salt
- Add 1/2 pinch asafoetida (heeng)
- Add 3 cups water
Mix well and pressure cook on high flame until 1 whistle.
After 1 whistle, lower the flame to low and cook the dal for 5 - 7 minutes.
Switch off the flames and wait until the pressure gets released from the cooker, to open it.
Now, open the cooker and stir slowly.
- Add 1/2 cup water
Cook for 2 - 3 minutes.
Make sure the consistency of dal is pouring type, nor to thick neither too thin.
Take the dal out in a bowl.
Now let us change this dal into a chaat.
Take a small serving bowl. (Small or medium sized KATORI)
- Add 1 cube butter
- Add the dal (Half fill the bowl)
- Add 1 - 2 pinch of black salt
- Add 1 - 2 pinch chaat masala
- Add 1 - 2 pinch of roasted cumin powder (jeera)
- Add 1 - 2 pinch garam masala
- Add 1 tsp grated ginger
- Add 1 tsp green coriander chutney
- Add 1 tsp dry red chilli flakes
- Add 1 tsp freshly chopped coriander leaves
- Add 1 tsp chopped onions (optional)
- Add 1 - 2 crushed papri or mathri
- Squeeze few drops of lemon juice on top
- Add 1 tsp butter on top.
Dal Muradabadi is ready.
Serve it hot.
